Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event approaches, one notices a demand to include fresh award types to recognize unsung work and delight the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles in the world and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge game development, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
